Mobile GPS Tracking Service

August 16th, 2008 by odonata

Here we’ll give you some recommendations on how to make your own track and to enjoy it on Internet by yourself and with friends.

To make a track you need GPS unit or mobile phone with GPSed application installed and a digital photo camera. In a case you use photo camera separately from mobile please note that the data and time should be the same on both devices to avoid future mistakes. Choose the nice area and start making tracks and taking photos during your trip.

After that upload your track and photos on your computer. Sign in to GPSed.com. In the upper right corner of your screen press the link “Upload tracks” and find your recent track on your computer (GPX, KML or PLT formats). When the process is finish your track will appear on Google Maps. You can assign your tracks to Communities, read this post for more information!

The track will be more informative if you illustrate it with photos. Make your account at picasaweb.google.com or www.flickr.com, create your web-album. Upload your photos connected to this track into the web album. It is desirable to write “photos description” when uploading them into Picasa or FlickR. Add your photos to the track on gpsed.com/home by pressing “camera” icon in a list of “Opened Tracks” or on gpsed.com/track/<trackID> page by pressing “Attach photos” bottom in the upper right corner of your screen. If you wish you can edit track description, add comments here, etc. Photos will be pinned to a map according to the track’s timeline. Photos with no timestamps will be also attached to the track without geotagging.

When the track became visible on Google Maps, contain photos, waypoints and descriptions it is time to share it with friends. On the track page in the upper part of “Track information” press    button and send a link on it via e-mail, IM or by posting them to social networks:  Facebook™, MySpace™, StumbleUpon™, Twitter™ and many other social networks.  Share your tracks with other GPSed users. The best tracks could be displayed on our main page. You can read how to make your track Featured on GPSed for more information.

We plan to implement Track Widgets for GPSed users in the nearest time. With this option an ability to display your GPSed tracks on Google Maps, including LIVE tracks on your site or blog will appear. By the way, GPSed Position Widgets already available!

GPSed.com is a way of visiting places many of us will never get to see unless we watch the travel channel.  It is highlights the things that are of most interest to all of us. We hope you’ll enjoy your adventures with GPSed!

I am just curious. Does anyone have any examples of “sharing to MySpace”? I only ask because I haven’t had a chance to try this out yet and I am really curious. When you select this option in “create track” what does it actually do? Is there a profile I could look at where someone has done this?

Thanks!
