Mobile GPS Tracking Service

August 20th, 2008 Author: Valery

Several days ago we have updated GPSed Mobile Application for Blackberry version 1.0. This is not a beta-release version now, at last. In this update several bugs were fixed and two features were added:

  1. Possibility to turn on/off backlight right from GPSed application. Could be useful for people who want to conduct current speed monitoring, check current coordinates, travel distance, etc during the trip.
  2. Now it is possible to use “Reset GPS” function in Settings which drops current connection to GPS and starts this procedure from scratch. The feature was added after users’ requests.
  3. In last versions users encountered with difficulties in tracks uploading on the GPSed.com website. Now this bug was fixed!
  4. Wrong conversion in GPX format was also fixed in last version of GPSed for Blackberry.

To download a new version please follow this link or point your Blackberry browser to wap.gpsed.com and follow the instructions.

Looking  forward to your comments and improvement suggestions!

Here we’ll give you some recommendations on how to make your own track and to enjoy it on Internet by yourself and with friends.

To make a track you need GPS unit or mobile phone with GPSed application installed and a digital photo camera. In a case you use photo camera separately from mobile please note that the data and time should be the same on both devices to avoid future mistakes. Choose the nice area and start making tracks and taking photos during your trip.

After that upload your track and photos on your computer. Sign in to GPSed.com. In the upper right corner of your screen press the link “Upload tracks” and find your recent track on your computer (GPX, KML or PLT formats). When the process is finish your track will appear on Google Maps. You can assign your tracks to Communities, read this post for more information!

Want to see your trip in a Featured Track List on GPSed.com service and to become popular among GPSed users? Follow our simple recommendations and your track may be displayed on our main page!

  1. The track should cover the nice area which will be interesting and pleasant to see for other people. It should be illustrated with photos (several dozens of photos or even more will be very useful).
  2. Upload your track using your account on GPSed.com and make it Public.
  3. Make your account at http://picasaweb.google.com/ or http://www.flickr.com/, create your web-album or photo-set. Upload your photos related to this track into the web album. Please write “photos description” when uploading them into Picasa or FlickR to make your photos more informative.
  4. Add your photos to the track, press “Attach photos” button in the upper right corner of your track’s page.
  5. It is desirable to have photos with geo-position on the track. Photos will be pinned to a map according to the track’s timeline. Photos with no timestamps will be also attached to the track without geotagging.
  6. When viewing your track on track’s page you can specify “track description” of this track. Find “Track description” field and press “Edit”. Many people will be interested to learn more about the area, what is it famous for? What was the reason of the trip and the most exiting events during it?
  7. The most interesting waypoints (with a description) will also make the track more exciting for people.

Follow these recommendations carefully and you have a possibility to share your impressions with a large audience of our users. The authors of the best tracks will receive nice gifts: GPSed.com T-shirt, Certificate for 10 USD for our products at www.shapeservices.com, etc.

We hope to learn more about your trips from Featured Tracks at GPSed.com! If you still don’t have GPSed account you have a chance to make it for free and start enjoying this service!

If you got interested in making your own tracks featured, leave your comments here. All ideas and suggestions for featured tracks improvement are welcome.

As Alex mentioned in previous post we have released a new feature - associating tracks with related communities or organizations.

If you are a member of a travel club, a hiking society or a tourist organization you can add the name of your organization with its URL to your track so the other GPSed users will see it.

The example of a track associated with Odessa Tourist Club: June2007_dniestr1 #1, by Dolphin.

Adding Communities is very easy.
When you start writing a track you can add Community as one of the parameters. You can also add Communities to tracks that are already uploaded. To add a Community to uploaded track, click on the change status icon in the TrackList.

We have already several communities in out list most of which are connected with tourism and all kinds of outdoors activities, including nature conservation. They are Washington trails association, Mountaineering Councils of Scotland and Ireland, The Nature Conservancy, Nizhniy Novgorod Trekking Club, Professional Trailbuilders Association, etc.

If there’s no Community you belong to in our list, please send an email to communities@gpsed.com with the name of your Organization and we consider it for inclusion.

Happy tracking!

The Fast: GPSed.com has just become much faster than it used to be. We’ve turbocharged two main pages: the first page of the service, and, more importantly - the track page. There’s really no chance you can miss it.

The Curious: If you are a member of hikers, bikers, drivers, riders, runners, paragliders, or any other community of active curious people, now you can associate your tracks with the community. The name and link to the community website will be shown to every GPSed.com visitor viewing your track. We believe it’s a nice and easy way to tell people about your activities and engage more members. To add your communities or organizations to our service, please write to  communities@gpsed.com

And more:

- Better slide shows for track photos

- Detailed track information is now hidden by default, leaving more space for photos

Do you miss some specific feature on GPSed.com? Let us know!

Now it’s turn for BlackBerry owners to rejoice: we’ve just made a new release, labeled as 0.999 (oh really, does that 0.001 make any difference? :) Right after J2ME and Windows Mobile versions, it’s now possible to share tracks to Facebook, MySpace, Twitter and Blogger. Besides that, now we’ve got a nice auto-zooming track preview screen in track recording mode. We’ve also fixed a handful of bugs, including a quite annoying one that caused exceptions during long track records.

New BlackBerry client

Feel free to download the update by following this link: GPSed Mobile for Blackberry v. 0.999, or you can point your Blackberry browser to wap.gpsed.com.
