Mobile GPS Tracking Service

December 2nd, 2008 by odonata

Recently a possibility to install GPSed Pro version appeared for BlackBerry users. GPSed Pro contain several new features:

  • Lifetime support via e-mail;
  • SOS” button for instant position alerts over SMS or e-mail;
  • Live tracking with small intervals (up to 3 seconds).

We have improved this version. Let’s describe in details what have been changed:

  •  Algorithm of the address book work

In the previous version when the application started the address book was opened. This caused a certain delay of the application running especially if the address book contain many contacts. In a new version our users can select the appropriate contact from the addess book when it’s necessary without time-consuming. You will not waste much time when you’ll decide to use a “SOS” function during your trip!

  • Algorithm of waypoint creation

In the previous versions the waypoint was created when “OK” button is pressed. As a result of a high speed of your movement you can create a waypoint which as situated on some distance from waypoint you wanted to create. This happened because users have spent some time for waypoint name entering. In the new version of GPSed waypoint will be created when the appropriate menu item is selected. This is exactly the moment which users need.

  • Background mode

In the previous version it was possible to switch in the background mode only during track recording. Now the background mode is running even if the track is not recording but the device is still continue to receive coordinates. How this feature could be useful? Now by pressing “Enter” users immediately enter the application and additional satellite searching is not happening.

  • Bug fix

Also a bug concerning GPX format was fixed in the current version. GPX format was modified and now it suits all standards.

We hope this update will bring you much please and you’ll find new features useful. If so, leave your comments here to keep us informed on your thoughts and impressions.

With kind regards,
GPSed Team

I have just (yesterday) purchased the Pro ver for Balckberry; tried it out on a short trail today. Very nice, easy to use. BUT - I am in Malawi - there is no network support for Blackberry in this country, and worked locally.
Four questions:-
1. Uploding the track to a PC - how?
2. Submitting from the PC - how?
3. Is this track in a format I can use in Tracks4Africa?
4. I have created Waypoints .. how do I view them?

1. To upload track files from your BlackBerry to PC you can use Desktop Manager. You can find .gpsed files on a memory card or in the memory of the mobile handheld.

2. Just open your favorite web browser on your PC, open GPSed Upload page and select track files you want to upload to GPSed server.

3. I believe that the most modern GPS-services support GPX file format. So you can export your tracks to GPX format and use with other GPS system.

4. You should upload your track to GPSed server in order to view waypoints. Just open track’s page and “waypoint” icon will appear right on the track.

Tracking with GPSed for Blackberry is sometimes confusing. A manual is needed. For example, it is unclear how it works if you stop a track, then continue the same track, and what happens if network coverage is lost in the meanwhile. Later, I can sometimes see the track on the BB and sometimes the track list is empty.

It is also unclear what is supposed to happen if you have an active track going, lose coverage (like if you go indoors), and come back out into coverage. It appears that tracking resumes sometimes and sometimes does not but that automatic uploading stops.

These are just two examples of my own confusion where a detailed manual describing how the system is supposed to work would be helpful.

Latest version 1.2 for Blackberry - when converting native logged file into GPX format on the phone the time is offset by 12 hours (backwards) in GPX new file.

Is this a bug or am I missing something? My phone is set to the correct time BTW, something confirmed in the gpsed log.

Ken Says:

The old version worked great for me. Now the 1.2 version is not working. The screen correctly displays the info for my complete track but when I upload the track to GPSed website only about the first 25% of the track is transferred. And when I try to convert to GPX, the resulting file is corrupt. What is happening?
Blackberry 8330

Also, a bug shared by the old version and the current one. My elevation displays as -3700 feet above sea level (or rather below sea level) and when I hike up the numbers get smaller as if I really did live at the bottom of the sea. In reality I live at 3700 feet above sea level…
No, I have not bought the Pro version. I suspect it shares the same bugs…

Valery Says:

Thanks for your comments, we will investigate all described situations and will try to fix all problems.

Alex Says:

Ken,

We’ll check the elevation problem, could be a bug.

Track corruption / incomplete uploading: could you please send us your track file from BlackBerry? We’ll analyze it and will try to understand why it is broken. It’s the first report on broken files with the last versions.

Thanks!

Alex

I agree w/ bmwkayakhiker that it is sometimes very confusing. I too have done tracks where if i go to “pages” and “details”, i can see the track i’ve created along with the track details. There is a track name, says its on SD Card, etc., but if i go to “list”, there is nothing there and there is nothing in the menu to get the track there (only New Track or Continue). Very confusing.

If i’m doing something wrong, or there is a solution please advise.

Ken Marks Says:

OK, I bought the Pro version. I was happy with the old program and really want to see the bugs worked out in the new version.
I also have the sometimes disappearing track list. But the main problem I am having is tracking stopping after 24% of the track according to my upload while the screen shows the whole distance. I have emailed a couple of flawed tracks, Any help?
All of my tracks are broken and I can keep sending more if that helps. I use the program to track my runs so I have 2-3 tracks a week.
Thanks
