Mobile GPS Tracking Service

April 23rd, 2009 by maphan

Dear friends,

Today we celebrate 50,000-th user who joined GPSed service. For 1,5 years of working together we have been creating powerful, functional and user-friendly GPS tracking service. Your feedback, comments, suggestions and remarks have been helping us to improve GPSed web-service and mobile applications and even to launch new directions.

As of today GPSed users recorded over 75,000 tracks in 176 countries and attached over 36,000 photos.

GPSed made a long interesting way from a simple web-service to comprehensive location-based solution with own mobile applications, powerful web-service and Monitoring Service that has been launched recently.
Today Pro and Basic versions of GPSed mobile applications are available for the most mobile platforms: Apple iPhone, Blackberry, Windows Mobile Pocket PC and Smartphone and Java/Symbian. GPSed.com web-service allows to archive, manage and share GPSed tracks, attach photos and a lot of more. And GPSed Monitoring Service covers the requirements from family tracking to industrial monitoring of mobile objects (vehicles).

The service received numerous positive reviews and to our pride in February 2009 GPSed won the Sony Ericsson Content Awards for the In-car applications category!

Thank you for being with us! Stay tuned for future updates and news!

Many users are contacting us with the question why an altitude value is negative for their tracks. In the most cases this is a normal situation and not an error!

This happens because GPS receiver obtains an altitude value comparative to sea level but not to a ground level. At some places of the Earth ground level is lower than sea level. The lowest point of the surface of the Earth on dry land is the Dead Sea in Israel.  It is 422 meters (1,385 ft) below sea level.

But sometimes GPS receiver itself can wrongly obtain negative value of altitude comparative to sea level.  For more accurate fixing position in 3D mode at least 4 satellites required. That’s why when connection to satellites is bad, GPS receiver can work in 2D mode obtaining wrong value of altitude (elevation).  To fix it find open territory and wait for a least 4 satellites found.  Or purchase high-end GPS receiver.

As usual, please feel free to contact us if you need any assistance with our software.

Kind  regards,
GPSed Team

Some our users continue experiencing problems while opening pages of GPSed.com web site that contains Google Maps inside. Error message “Operation aborted” appears while loading these pages under Internet Explorer browser. We have investigated this issue and realized that error appears only for some modifications of Internet Explorer version 7 and version 6, while other versions of this web browser work well.

Error message appears because of a bug in Internet Explorer itself.  This bug is explained in Microsoft Knowledge Base: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/927917

Here is a quote from the link above:

How do I fix this problem?

The easiest way for you to fix the problem is to upgrade to Internet Explorer 8. This problem no longer occurs in Internet Explorer 8. To upgrade to Internet Explorer 8, visit the following Microsoft Web site:Windows Internet Explorer 8: Home page
http://www.microsoft.com/windows/internet-explorer/beta/default.aspx

For better performance and stable working of GPSed.com web service we recommend to use Mozilla Firefox 3, which can be downloaded from our Downloads page. By the way, Downloads page has been redesigned recently. It’s another reason to check it out.

For the last few days GPSed.com users may have noticed considerable performance issues. These problems were caused by the increased userbase, and we had to scale the system up to match it. We are happy to announce GPSed.com is back to life after major upgrade, and should be faster than ever. Thank you for your support and patience.

We are sorry for any incoveniences brought by this downtime. We’ll do our best to avoid it in the future.

Motivation from the jury - this In-Car application lets you track your location and share your track and position in real-time with your social networks incl. email and SMS.

Here is what Ross Rubin (Director, Industry Analysis and one of a judges) said about GPSed Mobile Application:

“What makes GPSed especially suited for use in cars? Using GPSed mobile application, you do not need any special expensive in-car monitors, all you need is handheld with Internet connection and application installed. Using GPSed, you can write tracks that visually are more beautiful than usual tracks. Besides, tracks may be longer because user can charge device’s battery right inside the car.
Making photos along the trip, its easy to download them directly to GPSed online archive.
Let’s imagine you’re moving across the territory of United Kingdom and your family in Sweden can see your trip pictures exactly in the moment when you stored them. Isn’t it amazing?”

GPSed became popular, our statistics can prove that!

First of all I want to represent new small feature on a start page - common statistic of GPSed.com service, such a total number of tracks, attached photos, etc.

As of today, our tracks cover 128 countries, this is more then a half of the world! The largest number of tracks we’ve got from United States (6638), Russia (2289), Germany (2231), Ukraine (1513), United Kingdom (1403), Italy (1092) and Canada (1064).

There are also countries with only one track represented on GPSed: Svalbard and Jan Mayen, Armenia, Cambodia, Laos, Malta, Ethiopia, Benin, Saint Kitts and Nevis, Dominica, Andorra, Botswana, Tanzania, Mozambique and Uzbekistan. I think tracks from such countries can be very interesting. By the way, to find all tracks from exact country you can sign in, open Search tab on /home page, expand “Advanced Search” panel and choose any country from dropdown list.

Do you know that there are 183 tracks at GPSed.com under the title “to work”?

The average speed of people movement to work is 15.6 kilometers per hour and the average distance to the work place is 18.5 kilometers!

If you got interested in various statistic posts in GPSed Blog leave your comments here. All ideas and suggestions are welcome!
