See more tracks at a glance!

Meet hot update on GPSed.com. Now our users have new and very useful possibility to search GPSed tracks all over the world right on a map!

To find GPSed tracks directly on a map please sign in to your GPSed account and zoom a map in a place you like. On a certain zoom level you’ll  see semi-transparent track lines. These are the tracks by other users which are situated in a visible area. Put mouse cursor over the one of these lines and it’ll become wider (doesn’t work under IE). Click on a track to get it’s details:  author, distance, duration, geo information (country, area and city) and track’s content information, including number or waypoints, photos and comments. In this dialog you can open track or view it in details.

Surely not all GPSed  tracks are visible on a certain zoom level otherwise service usage become inconvenient. Only the most popular tracks in the current map viewport are shown.

How can it be useful? You can search for tracks in an area you are interested in, read comments and impressions by other GPSed users. This will certainly help you to create your own tracks or to plan your trip! Another great use case is to discover tracks of other GPSed authors around your own one.

We highly appreciate your comments and feedback!

RSS (Really Simple Syndication) used to publish frequently updated content such as blog entries, news headlines, and podcasts. For GPSed users we prepared a new feature to keep up with our web site in an automated manner. Now you can make a subscription on the new public tracks of all users you like using RSS.

Want to know more about that?

On the page of each track near the author’s name you can easily find an icon (User’s RRS Feed - click to subscribe to the latest public tracks of this user). After click on this icon you can choose any RSS reader you like: Google Reader, My Yahoo, Firefox Live Bookmarks and any other RSS reader you like. Now every time when your favourite author published his new tracks you will always receive a notification.

We hope you find this feature useful! If so, please leave your comments here. All ideas and suggestions are welcome!

As Alex mentioned in previous post we have released a new feature - associating tracks with related communities or organizations.

If you are a member of a travel club, a hiking society or a tourist organization you can add the name of your organization with its URL to your track so the other GPSed users will see it.

The example of a track associated with Odessa Tourist Club: June2007_dniestr1 #1, by Dolphin.

Adding Communities is very easy.
When you start writing a track you can add Community as one of the parameters. You can also add Communities to tracks that are already uploaded. To add a Community to uploaded track, click on the change status icon in the TrackList.

We have already several communities in out list most of which are connected with tourism and all kinds of outdoors activities, including nature conservation. They are Washington trails association, Mountaineering Councils of Scotland and Ireland, The Nature Conservancy, Nizhniy Novgorod Trekking Club, Professional Trailbuilders Association, etc.

If there’s no Community you belong to in our list, please send an email to communities@gpsed.com with the name of your Organization and we consider it for inclusion.

Happy tracking!

Now it’s turn for BlackBerry owners to rejoice: we’ve just made a new release, labeled as 0.999 (oh really, does that 0.001 make any difference? :) Right after J2ME and Windows Mobile versions, it’s now possible to share tracks to Facebook, MySpace, Twitter and Blogger. Besides that, now we’ve got a nice auto-zooming track preview screen in track recording mode. We’ve also fixed a handful of bugs, including a quite annoying one that caused exceptions during long track records.

New BlackBerry client

Feel free to download the update by following this link: GPSed Mobile for Blackberry v. 0.999, or you can point your Blackberry browser to wap.gpsed.com.

There are new version GPSed for Blackberry 1.0 available, we recommend to update for all users. Discussion in this post is closed.

Well, today we introduce one more update of our mobile application. This time it’s a new client for Java phones, also known as GPSed for J2ME/MIDP. New version is tagged 3.0 beta. As previous major version was 2, you can imagine there’s some sweet stuff in this update. Here’s the list of most important of them:

  • Sharing your tracks to Facebook, MySpace, Twitter and Blogger
  • Support of internal GPS in the following phones: Nokia 6650, 6220, 3155i, 6155i, 6165, 6255; Sony Ericsson W760, W760i, C905
  • You can now pick contacts from address book for sharing your position over SMS

And of course lots of bugfixes. Here you can see some pictures of the new user interface.

We’re happy to announce a long-awaited new release of GPSed for Windows Mobile. Application has become much more stable and user-friendly. Besides important bugfixes, this update includes a bunch of new features. Most of all we like the new feature of sharing your tracks with friends on Facebook, MySpace, Twitter and Blogger. When you start a new track, it only takes one touch of a button to post it to major social networks so your friends will follow you. You can as well share your existing tracks.

New WindowsMobile client features

With the new version you can create track waypoints with text description, and register new GPSed accounts right on your PocketPC or Smartphone. We thought it would be nice for you to know about the following improvements and bugfixes:

  • Application memory usage has been significantly decreased. Moreover, tracking for a long time does not consume much memory anymore.
  • GPS support is improved
  • Completely reworked user interface for uploading tracks to GPSed.com and social networks
  • Fixed problems with weird track “jumps” across oceans and continents
  • VGA screens are now properly supported
  • Ability to select COM0 port as source of GPS data
  • and many usability improvements

We highly recommend you to download the latest version of GPSed for Windows Mobile. Your feedback is appreciated!
