October 30th, 2008 by odonata

Here we would like to describe a new update of GPSed website. Last time the users profile page http://gpsed.com/user/<username> have been improved greatly. As it was before, it is still possible to detect the latest user’s position on the map.

However the user’s profile page have many new features now!

  • We have added some statistic data on users profile:
  •

    Entering users profile page you will find the account registration date and the date of last visit on GPSed. You will easily see the amount of featured tracks by this user and obtain information on how many photos were geotagged to the user’s public tracks, how many public tracks were uploaded by him or her on GPSed. And finally, you will find information on how many comments were left.

  • The latest public photos are now visible on users profile.
  • Find last 8 photos (from public tracks only) by selected user in his or her profile page.

  • Get information on visited countries quickly.
  • This is not only a list of visited countries.  Our service calculates the percent of visited countries of the world!

  • The block “Nearby GPSed Users” was added to the user’s profile.
  • The five nearest users could be easily detected and you will know the distance between you and them. The  “Nearby GPSed Users” are searched within a radius of 200 km.

    There are also some small usability improvements:  position refresh rate, the possibility to follow user, etc. The small overview map will help to determine the part of the world where user is located quickly and easily.

    Visit your favourite authors profile pages on GPSed! If you still don’t have your favorite authors we can recommend you Alex, DoLphin, Hitman and Vizael.

    With kind regards,
    GPSed Team.

    Here we’ll talk about the List of Tracks which is available in GPSed mobile clients. To open it just select “List of Tracks” in the application menu.

    The list shows names and statuses of all your recorded tracks.  Every track has some color and icon depending on it’s status. Let’s understand which icon correspond to which status:

    The icon means that current track is recording at the moment.

    Empty track (track which contains no GPS points). Such track is absolutely useless and could be deleted.

      Track is partly stored on server. Probably this track was uploading to server unless it was stopped and new GPS points were received from GPS receiver. Such icon indicates that the last part of points was not uploaded.

    Track is completely on mobile device (no points on server). Such track could be uploaded to server by choosing of the appropriate item in the application menu. However, if some track was uploaded to GPSed web-service via web-browser, GPSed mobile application will not “recognize” such situation and track can still maintain “on mobile” status.

    Track is completely uploaded to server.

    As always, we are glad to receive additional questions and suggestions from you!

    If you haven’t tried GPSed mobile application to track your trips, it’s time to check it out.  Application is fully compatible with BlackBerry, Windows Mobile and Java devices with internal GPS receivers or external Bluetooth GPS receivers.

    Search” function on GPSed opens various possibilities for us to “visit” places that many of us will never get to see unless we watch a travel channel. This however is more personal than reading guides for travelers and highlights the things that are the most interesting to us. Visit GPSed.com as a registered user, press “Map” and start searching.

    Want to know more about this or another country? “Search by country” is really what you need. Choose the country of your origin or an “exotic” country and start your “virtual” trip. View the photos carefully and imagine you are the part of this adventures.

    During such searching among GPSed tracks I’ve found many routes which impressed me greatly. I highlighted the authors who are making really nice tracks, with cool photos and useful information in a description.

    You can also subscribe on the new public tracks of all users you like using RSS Feed.

    I like Alex adventures on Greek islands, tracks by DoLphin at the Dniestr river in Ukraine, Vizael’s, Fbatista72’s  and Hitman’s tracks in a beautiful towns. I also enjoy flights by Aerobat!

    The track by Cmlandau from the New York Botanical Garden with the unique plants represented there is worth to be viewed .

    Tracks from expeditions by tourists are also amazing: in my opinion tracks by Marc78199 and Col Vieux Descent are really nice.

    A separate group of exciting GPSed tracks created by GPSed Team is Historic TracksCircumnavigation of Ferdinand Magellan, Maiden voyage of Titanic, Heroic and the last trip of battleship Bismarck during WWII move you tens and hundreds years backward revealing these amazing stories on a map. Stay tuned on GPSed Blog for upcoming pieces of history in a new angle.

    Besides the tracks mentioned above there are many little-known routs worth our attention. Press the “Search” button on GPSed and start your “virtual” trip through the tracks of GPSed users.

    Yours sincerely,
    GPSed Team

    Attaching photos to the track is increasing it’s popularity among users. The track with nice photos became much more informative and attractive. It is automatically became a candidate to the featured tracks which are resembled on the main page of GPSed Service.

    Here we’ll tell you how we have improved photo attaching wizard. Now the process of photo attaching became even easier than it was before.

    What’s new?

    You will enjoy new headers and footers, and new design in general. Now all pages are stylish, shipshape and nice.

    Before the photos attached to the track the users have a possibility to preview the current results beforehand, change parameters and preview again.

    The one feature is of a special importance in the new update. The user could choose any photo from the list and indicate it’s location on the map. After that all remained photos will be geotagged regarding selected one based on the time difference between these photos.

    How does it work?!

    • The time of the track point which was selected by the user is determined;
    • The time when the photo was done is also determined;
    • After that, this two time values are compared and saved. To understand better what happen later we’ll give you an example. Imagine there is a photo in the list which was done in a five minutes after selected photo (or ten minutes before it). Such point will be searched based on the time value among all track points and if not founded the photo will remain without geoposition;
    • and so on for all other photos…

    Besides the way of photos geotagging which was described above the possibility to enter the time from your photo camera is still remained. Using this function all photos locations will adjusted regarding selected time. The one difference is that now the time value could be additionally adjusted on the 4th step of  the photo wizard if the it was entered not very accurate on the previous step.

    Attaching photos to Picasa and FlickR became much more easier for the users now! Try it and prove by yourself!

    We have added a possibility for users to attach not only photos from a certain set on FlickR, but all photos from selected date range. By the default this range is equal the dates of start and finish of the track, but could be easily change to another one. Using this feature you can find and attach absolutely every photo from your FlickR account. In Picasa it is a little bit different, the photos could be only in albums there.

    Geoposition of photos is saved on Photo-Services (Picasa and FlickR). When the checkbox “Update geoposition on Picasa”  is selected the photo geoposition will be saved inside the photo, and the photo will be visible on the map on corresponding Photo-Service!

    For FlickR photos we are using  “Photo Title” as a description from now, which we believe is more valuable than “Photo Description”.

    Besides all mentioned above we have done some important bug  fixes concerning photo wizard and added several small features which should make photos attaching more easily and friendly for you.

    Attach nice photos to your tracks and keep a good memory of your journey in a free web archive on Free Mobile GPS Tracking Service.

    With kind regards,
    GPSed Team.
